Serian 1963-2008

Last Monday my dearly wife brought along a book from her office. I was very eager to see the content of the book as it refers to the historical development background of Samarahan district from 1963 (Sarawak joined Malaysia) till 2008.

The title :
SAMARAHAN
Dari Kampung Terpencil ke Desa Ilmu

Preface from YAB Pehin Sri haji Abdul Taib Mahmud
(Chief Minister of Sarawak)-present.

"Let us start from different premises and think of what we can do for the people by coorperation rather than fighting. We should all think what we can do for the people, by being patience, in building up big machinery and building up the momentum of a strong development"

I am focusing on my hometown-Serian.

Here are some pics taken from the book:

This book compiled by a group of Samarahan Division Residential Office staffs.
Chief editor : Dr. Sulaiman Husaini
(Samarahan District Resident)

YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Hj Abd Rahman Yakub (left-wearing hat)
with Temenggong Jugah Barieng officiating the Serian District Office on 28 August 1971.

You can see the Sarawak first flags hanged among the Malaysia flags. The crown logo in the center reflects the Bristish administration before Sarawak joining Malaysia in 1963.

The skyview of Serian in 1970's. The old main bazaar of Serian.
Some of the bazaar had been reconstructed due to fireblazed in 2008.

Bridge that connecting Serian-Simanggang road back in the 1950's.
My parents were born in this era. Simanggang had changed it's name to Sri Aman in 1984.

The pretty maidens ushering the VIP at Kampung Rasau, Serian dated 16 Apr. 1975.
The road is muddy and some of the maidens not wearing slippers at all.

I was suprised to see that those maidens were sexy. I didn't know that it was their tradional attires at that time until I saw this pics.

At present, Serian is under the administration of Samarahan Division Residential office. Basically there are 4 districts under Samarahan Division administration :
1. Kota Samarahan
2. Asajaya
3. Serian
4. Simunjan

There's a lot more to tell but if you want to know more about it, you can find this book at the Samarahan Division Residential office.

Have a nice sweet day!
